​A VA loan is a mortgage loan that is guaranteed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). This means that the VA will reimburse the lender if the borrower defaults on the loan. VA loans are available to eligible veterans, active-duty service members, and surviving spouses. The benefits of VA loans are that there are no down payments required, relaxed credit score requirements and the ability to finance closing costs.
